On June 21, Minister of Foreign Minister of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, took part in the meeting of the European Union’s General Affairs Council, using the opportunity to call for the preparation of more sanctions against warmongering Russia.

Rinkēvičs also pointed out the need for the European Council to agree on Ukraine being granted the status of a candidate for membership in the EU, according to an account from the Foreign Ministry.

Latvia supports the European perspective for Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine, as well as Moldova and Ukraine being given candidacy status to join the EU, the Foreign Minister said.

The European Council will meet on June 23 and 24.

"Edgars Rinkēvičs called for work to be launched on preparations for the seventh package of EU restrictive measures against Russia and Belarus," the account said, without quoting him directly.
