New Unity has eye on Finance Ministry in new government

In the government formed by Evika Siliņa (New Unity), the political force would like to retain the post of finance minister, said Edmunds Jurēvics, Vice-President of the New Unity faction, in an interview on Latvian Television September 4.

He said that this week there would be active work on the declaration of the future government and its priorities. It is also planned to work on the 'emergency issues' list, and one of these will be high prices in supermarkets.

This week there will also be talks on the areas of responsibility. When asked what sectors the New Unity wants under its responsibility, Jurēvics said the discussion on this in the party would continue.

"But what has previously been said about our priorities is that they remain unchanged. This approach, too, that the Prime Minister's party also has a Minister of Finance, I think it will not change in this next government," said the Member.

He said there needs to be clarity on the division of responsibilities this week or next week. “There's not really time for long talks, it's got to go ahead. By September 15, the government must, in my opinion, be approved,” Jurēvics said.

He added that Edvards Smiltēns from the United List, which has withdrawn from the future government in its current composition, is likely to lose the post of Saeima Speaker.

“I forecast that we will likely have a new Saeima Speaker later this month,” the spokesman for the New Unity said.
