Rīga City Council forms new coalition

Riga City Council's new coalition partners – New Unity (JV), National Alliance/Latvian Regional Alliance (NA/LRA), Code for Riga, Honor to serve Riga, Development of Latvia, For! – signed a memorandum of cooperation on Thursday, August 17.

The new coalition, which has described itself as the “Coalition for Cooperation”, will direct the former Vice Mayor Vilnis Ķirsis (JV) to the post of mayor.

The political forces, together with two additional deputies – Valters Bergs and Guntars Jirgensons – have committed to ensuring "effective, stable, legal and professional management" of the Rīga City Council until the end of the current term of office.

The new coalition has identified a number of priorities. In particular, the coalition is committed to increasing remuneration for employees of the municipal authorities of Rīga, and to the freezing of the remuneration of elected political officials.

Among the priority jobs, the Coalition has also proposed supporting socially vulnerable population groups by ensuring greater access to services.

The priority list also contains a number of points on improving urban infrastructure.
