Latvian government to discuss buying airBaltic bonds

The state could purchase bonds of the national airline airBaltic worth not more than EUR 100 million, Finance Minister Arvils Ašeradens (New Unity) said in a media briefing on Monday, April 29, after a coalition meeting.

The Saeima recently adopted the government-led amendments to the “Law on Budget and Financial Management”, which grant the Minister of Finance the power to use State budget resources for the purchase of fixed-income securities of capital companies where the state has a decisive influence, with the support of the Saeima and the government.

The adopted changes will enable the country to participate in the issue of bonds of Latvian national airline airBaltic alongside and under the same conditions as international private investors.

Prime Minister Evika Siliņa (New Unity) said that the specific sums and solutions will still be discussed at Tuesday's government meeting.

airBaltic needs to look for development opportunities by attracting private capital, Siliņa said, noting, among other things, that is planned to list airBaltic shares on the stock exchange in the future, which will also enable Latvian residents to buy shares in the company.
