Rinkēvičs to quit New Unity political association

The newly elected President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs (New Unity) will quit the political alliance in the coming days, Rinkēvičs said at a press conference on Wednesday after being elected.

RInkēvičs said: “In the coming days, my submission of putting down the 'card' of party member will come. It's the first formal [step].”

When asked how he would ensure political neutrality in the post of President of Latvia, Rinkēvičs said: “It is in my interest, in the interests of the country and in the interests of all parties, that I apply the same [attitude] to all.”

Rinkēvičs also said he and Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš (New Unity) are prepared to discuss who would be the next Foreign Minister after Rinkēvičs, who has been in that position for nearly 12 years now.

Incumbent Egils Levits' term ends on July 8.
