Eigims sacked as Daugavpils mayor

The council of Latvia’s second largest city Daugavpils on Thursday sacked Rihards Eigims (Our Party) as Daugavpils mayor.

At Thursday’s council meeting, 11 councilors, including six members of Latgale Party, four councilors of Harmony party and one councilor of Eigims’ Our Party, voted for dismissing Eigims as Daugavpils mayor.

A petition calling for Eigims’ resignation had been signed by nine of the city council’s 15 members, which was enough to unseat the mayor in the vote.

The mayor was removed from office without a debate and the decision was taken a few minutes. The city council’s meeting is still in progress.

As reported, there are three political parties represented in the Daugavpils council. The ruling coalition includes four councilors of Our Party and six councilors of Latgale Party. However, Latgale Party announced in October that it was withdrawing from the coalition with Eigims’ Our Party.

Latgale Party chairman Janis Lacplesis said at that time that the coalition had effectively disintegrated. A bit later, representatives of the two parties told LETA that the coalition partners would carry on with the implementation of planned projects and that a reshuffle of the city council’s leadership was not on the agenda.

Meanwhile, five members of Harmony party have been sitting in opposition in the Daugavpils city council. Harmony representative Andrejs Elksnins has said that a snap municipal election would be the only solution that might ensure a constructive work of the city council. He also said that Harmony would not propose Eigims’ resignation.
