The Riga City Court has prohibited the political party For Stability! (Stabilitātei!, S!) from using the “S!” trademark in economic circulation, according to the court's decision of October 17.

The court has satisfied the request of the municipality of Sigulda to provide temporary protection for the “S!” trademark, which has been used by the municipality for over 12 years on its own and as part of the slogan S!gulda aizrauj (S!gulda excites). The municipality of Sigulda claims the right to be the only user of this trademark in Latvia in order not to create misleading associations with the values of the municipality.

The Court has prohibited the use of the trademark, including advertising and representation materials, without the permission of the municipality of Sigulda, until the final decision.

The political party “For Stability!” chose to use “S!”, which is a registered trademark and symbolism of Sigulda municipality, to reflect its visual identity.

Since the beginning of the pre-election campaign, in which the party used “S!” symbolism, the municipality of Sigulda has initiated several cases - the Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB), the State Police, the Competition Council and the Patent Office - and filed an application to the court, including requests to apply temporary remedies, in the hope of doing so, to achieve an immediate ban on the use of the municipal trade mark.
