Latvian leaders congratulate France's Macron

Take note – story published 6 years ago

Latvia's senior officials took the opportunity to congratulate Emmanuel Macron on becoming the new President of France, even while official results are still to be announced.

The good wishes came based on estimates after the closing of polls which suggested the independent candidate had won a decisive victory to secure the Elysee palace and defeat rival Marine Le Pen.

Prime Minister Maris Kucinskis described it as a "great day for France and Europe."

Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics used very similar words in his response, while adding a wish that Europe must "act together against meddling in elections."

He was also one of many people tweeting "Vive la France".

And Latvia's own President Raimonds Vejonis took the opportunity to demonstrate his French language skills.
