Parliamentarians vote against freezing their own pay

The Latvian parliament in a vote on Thursday rejected the proposal by the ruling National Alliance to freeze the lawmakers’ salaries which are to be increased under the effective legislation in relation to the increase of the average wage in the country.

Under the effective law on salaries of state and municipal officials, salaries of lawmakers are determined by applying a 3.2 coefficient to the average wage in the country.

Due to the increase of the average wage, monthly salaries to parliamentarians are to be raised by 157 euros in 2016 but the National Alliance suggested that the lawmakers should show solidarity with the general public and waive the pay rise.

But they decided not to.
