Talks on Riga Council coalition formation start Monday

After the Riga City Council's emergency elections, on Monday, talks between political parties on the formation of a coalition will begin, Latvian Radio reported August 31.

The leading party Development/For!/Progressives leader Mārtiņš Staķis has entered into coalition negotiations with representatives of New Unity, the National Alliance and the Latvian Association of Regions, as well as the New Conservative Party.

Staķis stressed that these negotiations should not be delayed and that the first discussions are not intended to focus on job delegation. He believes the first talks will also show whether the parties can agree.

“All deadlines are already overdue. The City Council should have started working in March,” said Staķis. “What we certainly shouldn't do is drag on coalition-building talks for two or three months.  All parties will have to be able to compromise somewhere, to agree on something. I would say that we actually have to be able to agree on a new coalition within two weeks.”
