Some KPV LV deputies to propose member Didzis Šmits as presidential candidate

Take note – story published 4 years ago

Some deputies of the KPV LV party will put forth MP Didzis Šmits for president, they told Latvian Televison May 9.

Meanwhile the parliamentary opposition has collected 34 signatures to postpone the presidential election to June 5 but that alone doesn't mean it will be. Unofficially, the coalition has agreed holding the parliamentary vote on electing the president on May 29.

Šmits meanwhile refused to elaborate the move to LTV, saying he will do so Monday when his candidacy will be put forth officially.

With this, three candidates for the office of President of the Republic of Latvia have now been named: Egils Levits, a judge at the European Court of Justice; Ombudsman Juris Jansons; and KPV LV's Didzis Šmits.
