Latvia's presidential vote to take place May 29

Take note – story published 4 years ago

The parliamentary vote to pick Latvia's next president will take place May 29, the Saeima press service confirmed May 9.

"Please be informed that on 9 May, the Saeima Presidium convened an extraordinary session of the Saeima, which will take place on May 29 at 10.00.  Presidential elections will be on the agenda."

So far three names have emerged as likely contenders to become Latia's next head of state: Egils Levits, Juris Jansons and Didzis Šmits, all men. Levits is regarded as the strong favorite, having won official backing of the ruling coalition government, which should ensure he has the 51 votes required of the the 100 vote legislature.
