On Thursday, June 18, the Saeima approved Judge Juris Stukāns as Prosecutor General.

92 members voted in favor of his approval. No one voted against or abstained.

In the past, Stukāns stressed that the Saeima Legal Affairs Committee's deputies, who unanimously supported the draft decision on the approval of Stukāns as Prosecutor General, had the aim of ensuring legality in Latvia, so he chose to stand for the post of Prosecutor General. Stukāns explained that the prosecutor's office was responsible for ensuring the advance of pre-trial criminal proceedings and cases.

He considers that the existing arrangements should be improved without changing the law, but by improving the role of the prosecutor in pre-trial investigations. This means that the public prosecutor should play a leading and central role in the course of criminal proceedings.

Stukāns is the chair of the Collegiate of Criminal Justice of Riga Regional Court. In the past, he also worked in the Northern District Court, was the executor of the duties of the Chairman of Riga Regional Court, worked in the Ministry of Justice and in the Information Center of the Ministry of Interior.
