Saeima moves forward law for Economic Affairs Court in Latvia

Saeima Legal Affairs Commission decided on Tuesday to move forward draft law for creation of Economic Affairs Court, the commission said in a news release on June 9.

The amendments to the law on judicial power directed to the third reading provide for the introduction of the Economic Court of Justice as a specialized Court of First Instance.

The Legal Affairs Commission previously did not have enough votes to create the draft law. In April, the opposition to creation of specialized court was expressed by the party "KPV LV", whose representative Aivars Geidāns abstained from voting. That was enough for the reform to get stuck.

The creation of a specialized court is the intention of Justice Minister Jānis Bordāns (New Conservative Party), supported by the government in early November 2019. It is hoped that this court would improve the quality of judicial work and reduce deadlines for dealing with complex cases.

The Saeima conceptually approved the creation of the Economic Affairs Court in December 2019. In spring 2020, however, resistance was shown by the party KPV LV.
