One detained for banned Russian channel distribution in Latvia

The State Police in Rīga detained a man who distributed devices intended for the retransmission of banned Russian television channels, the police said on June 30.

On June 19 this year, employees of the State Police in the Rīga region detained a man born in 1979 for illegal business in the Rīga City area. In the course of the investigation, it was established that he had distributed, in a short time period, specially adapted devices which provided the possibility to watch television programs banned in the Republic of Latvia, including “NTV”, “Mir”, “Rossija”, “Perviy kanal”. Police officials identified and removed nine specially adapted devices and components.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated.

A number of different investigative actions are currently being carried out in criminal proceedings in order to ascertain all the circumstances of the case.

The responsibility of those who have received the service will also be assessed, the police said.

The State Police shall invite anyone who has information about an illegal business which is related to the re-transmission of Russian channels banned in Latvia, to report it by e-mail: [email protected] or by sending an application electronically to the portal latvija.gov.lv, using an e-address or confirmed with an electronic signature, at [email protected] or by submission at the nearest State Police station.
