The value of cocaine cargo imported into Latvia in banana boxes is approximately EUR 30 million, Simona Grāvīte, head of the Public Relations Division of the State Police, told LETA January 10.

The expertise for accurate cargo volume is continuing.

The police said the particular cargo of bananas was received from South America for sale, not only in Latvia but also abroad. At the end of last year, cargoes of cocaine hidden in bananas were also found in Poland and the Czech Republic.

As reported, on December 23, the safety service of the retail network Maxima turned to the police as packages of white powdered substances were found in two boxes of bananas under the fruit.

The department for the Combating of Organised Crime, in cooperation with the territorial police departments, carried out procedural activities which resulted in the removal of 168 packages with the substance.
