Pictures released by the state roads agency, Latvijas valsts ceļi (LVC) show that the wooden slats used to form the benches appear to have been sawn away at 15 different stops. LVC put the cost of the vandalism at more than 1,100 euros.
One theory is that the vandals wanted the timber for firewood. However, given the relatively small amount of wood this would produce, plus the fact that to collect it a good deal of fuel would need to have been used and the wood itself had preservative coatings making it not particularly suitable for use in heating systems, it seems at least as likely that the whole thing is a stunt, possibly for the benefit of Russian social media channels.
Pie valsts autoceļiem Dobeles un Tukuma novadā šonedēļ izdemolētas 15 autobusu pieturvietas, informēja @LVceli pārstāvji.
