Child abuse in Latvia has risen in first half of 2022: police estimate

In six months of this year, compared to the previous period, the number of children suffering from violence, sexual abuse, and rape has increased, according to the State Police's report on juvenile delinquency, child victims of criminal offenses, and crime prevention, LETA reported November 7.

In the reference period, compared to the previous period, the number of children suffering from cruelty and violence has increased and this year is 53, which is 19 children more than the first half of last year.

This year, 50 children have suffered from sexual abuse, which is 17 more than last year, and 26 from rape, which is 13 more compared to last year.

In six months this year, the number of children suffering from inducement to engage in sexual activities and from the violation of the rules on the circulation of pornographic performances, restrictions on intimate entertainment, and pornographic material, has decreased.

According to the police, girls are more likely to be victims of such crimes than boys. 

During the reporting period, the police participated in a number of activities directed against the circulation of child pornographic materials. For example, the police participated in the “Perons” operation, which carried out information monitoring and gathering to identify offenders by targeting dealers of prohibited materials on file exchange networks.
