State Police seizes illegal firearms

Officials of the State Police have removed a significant amount of firearms, their essential components, explosives and explosive devices from an illegal group discovered several months ago, State Police said July 27.

One of the priorities of the Criminal Investigation Board of the State Police is the fight against illicit trafficking of firearms. Each year, permanent controls and a series of investigative actions are carried out.

This year, the police obtained information on persons allegedly engaged in the illicit trafficking of firearms, their essential components, munitions and bombing devices in Rīga, Liepāja, Baldone, Dobele municipality, Jaunjelgava municipality and Daugavpils municipality. Four criminal proceedings were initiated for the manufacture, repair, possession or sale of a firearm, essential components of a firearm, ammunition for a firearm, a high-energy pneumatic weapon.

The investigation and operational activities resulted in the identification of the persons involved, males born in 1957, 1962, 1963, 1970, 1978, as well as the locations of items illegally stored. During criminal investigations, several searches were carried out in apartments and private houses.

As a result, three pistols, two revolvers, 15 carbines, 32 essential components of firearms, 2094 units of ammunition, one hand grenade, 42 explosive devices, 508 components and four kilograms of explosives have been removed from illegal circulation.

The State Police is calling on the public to act responsibly and notify authorities about illegal possession and storage of weapons.
