High interest in joining National Guard in Latvia

Although the interest in joining the National Guard is lower than last year following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, it is still high, Commander of the National Guard Kaspars Pudāns told Latvian Television on August 24.

“Still people finding time to be part of the National Guard and acquire these skills. There are over 700 new applications this year, we continue to receive young people,” Pudāns said.

He acknowledged that there had been concerns that the initial “wave of feelings would be dwindling”, but the drop-out rate was low and for reasons other than people's own will.

The last two years have been more active for the National Guard, said Pudāns. “At the moment it is the eastern border of the country, our units are located on the eastern border in support of the State Border Guard. At the moment, our mission has been strengthened in the light of the increase in risk,” he said.

As reported, extra forces of the border guard, National Guard, National Armed Forces and State Police are located at the eastern border since the number of border offenders has been rising rapidly.
