The construction of a permanent fence on the Latvian-Belarusian border has been completed at the length of 36.1 kilometers since August 2022, according to the information on the home page of the State JSC “State Real Estate” (VNĪ).

“Latvian State Forests” has de-forested approximately 82 kilometers of the 85.8 kilometers to be covered in the first stage.

Overall, the construction works are currently ongoing at 75 kilometers from the 82 kilometers that have been deforested.

Previously, Renārs Griškevics, Chairman of the Board of VNĪ, said that, with the increase in the deforested area and the completion of the infrastructure work, the construction of the fence would accelerate five times - up to one kilometer per day.

The project provides for the construction of the Latvian-Belarusian State border fence of 173 kilometers. The first round of 85.8 kilometers will be completed by the spring of 2023 and the second round of 63.9 kilometers by the spring of 2024. In parallel to the design and construction of the first two rounds, the development of the technical specification of the third stage is taking place.

The project for the construction of the eastern border is an interinstitutional cooperation project.
