At the moment, this is important in order to prevent the use of symbolism to incite aggression and hatred in Latvian society, said Pabriks.
“Of course, we will not remove the letter Z from the alphabet, but there must be a reasonable, non-bureaucratic approach here to see that this symbol, if used in some way associated with what is currently happening on the part of the aggressor state, then it is clear that a penalty should be imposed,” the Minister said.
“To show where we stand, at what values we as a state stand, as a society. Not powerlessly watch such a regime, such policies, such aggression, such intolerance, how supporters mock or challenge the rest of society.”
According to the Russian Defense ministry, the letter Z symbolizes a slogan 'for victory' (za pobedu).
