Eight howitzers to be stationed in Latgale

Take note – story published 5 years ago

Eight of the 47 howitzers the Latvian army bought from Austria will be stationed at the Lūznava military facility in Latgale, eastern Latvia, the National Armed Forces told LSM.

Chief of defense Leonīds Kalniņš said that Lūznava is currently the only location outside of the Ādaži military base where the howitzers will be stationed. The 36th support battalion of the National Guard is located at Lūznava and the base was unveiled on May 31, 2018 at the former premises of a vocational school.

The unit stationed at Lūznava is being actively reinforced, with local recruits offered to continue their professional service at Lūznava, Rēzekne or Daugavpils. The facilities at Lūznava are to be reinforced for the next five years.

Last week the Latvian army received the last of the howitzers Latvia had ordered from Austria.
