The state of emergency in Daugavpils, Augšdaugava, Krāslava and Ludza has been in force for more than five months. The reality on the border does not allow lifting of the emergency, conclude the Members of the Defence, Internal Affairs and Corruption Commission.
“Lithuania has a much more solid infrastructure, a fence that helps deter these individuals. We need to extend the emergency so that patrol and deterrence measures can continue,” explained Juris Rancāns, head of the Saeima Defence, Internal Affairs and Corruption Prevention Commission.
Rancāns also pointed out that the situation in the border area was controlled and that there was no cause for concern, but he considered it necessary to extend the emergency.
MPs spent several hours in talks with municipal leaders. Municipalities are prepared to engage in any process aimed at residents' safety, which is particularly important in the border area.
Most likely, Saeima committee representatives will meet with the municipal leaders again.
As reported, the State Border Guard also considers it necessary to extend the emergency situation.
