Europe's 'first 5G testbed for defense' gets new networks

Take note – story published 1 year ago

What is claimed to be "Europe's first 5G defense testbed", located in Latvia, has been supplemented by two new standalone 5G networks from Nokia and Ericsson, according to a release from the project.

The testbed, originally launched by telecommunications company LMT in collaboration with the Latvian National Armed Forces and Ministry of Defense, has been in operation since November of 2020.

It has become a testing ground for defense innovation thanks to its 5G capabilities, and a combination of key geographic factors, including the proximity of the Ādaži military base and training area, air force bases, and Latvia's extensive coastline.

The site is open to NATO allies to jointly develop, test, and demonstrate 5G applications in the defense industry. The unique combination of factors at the Ādaži testbed makes it possible to test a wide variety
of next-generation defence applications and according to those behind the project "It has been the site of multinational force training, experiments, and demonstrations, including with NATO, the US Department of Defense, the European Defence Fund, and the European Defence Industrial Development Programme
(EDIDP)."

Previous demonstrations include testing mission management platforms and unmanned terrestrial vehicles.

The two additional standalone 5G networks will allow for the centralized testing of relevant innovations on
various networks, checking compatibility.

Applications that are slated for future testing include remote AR/VR defence personnel training, command and control, and various maintenance activities with remote specialist participation.
