Around 220,000 pupils will start school year in Latvia

In the new school year, 220,051 pupils will learn in general education institutions. Of those, 21,584 are starting school, according to preliminary figures compiled by Education and Science (IZM) on August 31.

25,968 teachers will teach pupils local government and private general educational institutions.

In the new school year, 563 local government general education institutions will start work, of which 36 primary schools, 254 secondary schools, 231 high schools and gymnasiums, as well as 39 special education institutions, two with the possibility of obtaining vocational basic or secondary education and one evening shift school. On September 1, 72 private education institutions are also opening their doors.

The number of students in vocational education in 2023/2024 is expected to remain at the previous level, approximately 28 thousand, and around 10 thousand students will start in the first course of the new school year in 54 vocational education institutions, according to preliminary figures from the IZM.
