Covid contact persons will be able to still go to school in Latvia

As of February 14, school employees and students don't have to observe quarantine if they have become contact persons of Covid-19 infection, Cabinet decided February 8.

The amending annotation states that the incidence rate in the age group from 0 to 9 years and from 10 to 19 years is stabilizing, so restrictions can be eased. At the same time, routine screening tests are maintained in education institutions at basic and secondary levels in order to detect infections and carry out medical surveillance as soon as possible.

Only those employees or students who have been infected with Covid-19 have to stay at home.

The exception to quarantine applies only to participation in the educational process at school, extracurricular education and vocational education, but it is not allowed to visit places where a large number of people gather.

“We call on every educational institution, parent, and teacher to deal with epidemiological security measures with the greatest care, to wear masks correctly and not to gather needlessly, but we see that this will be a good step in ensuring the learning process so that we do not have to think about postponing exams or extending holidays,” Anita Muižniece, Minister for Education and Science said at the government meeting.

Until now, it has been difficult to organize the teaching process in schools, mainly due to a large number of contacts between Covid-19 patients, several educational institutions have indicated. The amendments do not apply to kindergarteners.
