The hottest debate in talks between the Latvian Education and Science Workers' Trade Union (LIZDA) and the Ministry of Education and Science (IZM) is currently about the salaries of higher education teachers, LIZDA's head Inga Vanaga told Latvian Radio on January 30.

She said that the involved parties had exchanged views and that on Monday, January 30, an increase in salaries for higher education teachers was expected from IZM.

“We cannot allow a lecturer, an assistant, to have a salary lower than colleagues who work in school or pre-school,” the head of the union said.

Similarly, the trade union and the ministry discuss that there are certain groups of educators who want to see more equity in pay.

It is also important to have a period of time in which it is planned to introduce the balance of loads agreed upon with ministers. The LIZDA insists it must begin as of September 1 this year.

The head of LIZDA stated that the agreement should be reached by February 1.
