Higher education salaries will also rise this year: teachers' union

Take note – story published 1 year ago

As of September 1 this year, university lecturers will also have higher salaries Latvian Education and Science Workers Union (LIZDA) leader Inga Vanaga told the Latvian Television morning broadcast on January 31.

Negotiations with the Ministry of Education and Science (IZM) ended in an agreement that as of September 1 wages would be increased for all educators, including universities. In 2024, the principles of wage formation will be reviewed, as there will be up-to-date data on average wages for public sector workers.

Vanaga said that it was important to achieve a balance of teacher load from September 1, rather than postponing it a few more years.

LIZDA and IZM discussions will continue on Tuesday. “Negotiations are not easy but constructive and targeted,” said Vanaga.

The Head of LIZDA has indicated that the agreement should be reached by February 1.
