Latvia's first 'Digital transformation center' opens in Ventspils

In Ventspils, the first Digital Transformation Center in Latvia has been opened, which will focus on adults' digital education, Latvian Radio reported on September 9.

At the center, the public will be offered to obtain professional skills to compete more successfully in the labour market, for example when it is necessary to retrain for different professions. The time of the Covid-19 pandemic has only increased the need to develop digital skills for people of different ages.

The project was prepared by Ventspils Digital Center, partly supported by the municipality, but most of the costs were covered by State budget resources. The already existing Ventspils Digital Center had become too small, and it was increasingly necessary to educate adults. The digital center started in 2015 with children's education, said Elina Kroņkalne, director of the centre.

"In view of the wide range of children's education, adult education remained abandoned. We actively directed the local government to think about spaces, to think about where it could be done. Our wishes were not about nothing great and grandiose, but a couple of rooms where adults could work," Kroņkalne said.

The need to build a platform for adult education has also been reinforced by the pandemic and the introduction of computer-based systems in manufacturing, port activity, and other sectors, Kroņkalnesaid.

"The last few years, when there was a pandemic and people had to transform themselves for public and local government services, because they were only remotely available, electronically, people became more actively interested. We trained remotely. The key thing is that people have an interest and understanding that they need it in order not only to receive everyday services, but also to get a different level of education in the future and to work in another sector,” Kroņkalne said.
