Learn basic Latvian with new online resource

Take note – story published 5 years ago

The Latvian Language Agency (LVA) has a new online resource to help people everywhere take their first steps in the Latvian language.

Named e-Laipa, (e-Footbridge) it is intended for adults learning Latvian and can take them through some of the basics of the language to A1 and A2-rated proficiency.

According to the website, by 2020, the more advanced B1 and B2 levels will also be available to learn online.

At LSM we gave it a go, but it does appear to have a few bugs still to iron out. For example, selecting the English language option for menus does not change the rendering of the various section titles from Latvian to English so unless you already know Latvian - unlikely given that this is for beginners - you have no way of knowing what you are clicking on.

Similarly the "User Guide" is available only in Latvian, which rather defeats the object of the whole exercise.

Nevertheless, the audio files work nicely, so it may be a useful resource for Latvian learners keen to get their pronunciation correct.

Users need to register, either at the site itself or using their Facebook or Twitter accounts.

So dip your toe into the beautiful Latvian language today at the e-Laipa website.
