Lauma Muižniece's previous job has been at the Latvian Investment and Development Agency for more than four years, working in the Technology Department. She has also been a guest lecturer and assistant professor at the Banking Institution of Higher Education. Also, since 2016, she has been working in a “Technology marketing” projects at the Institute of Chemical Physics of the University of Latvia.
Muižniece has a master's degree in business administration from the Banking Institution of Higher Education, while a doctorate in technology management has been obtained at Tallinn University of Technology and speaks English, Russian and German as well as Latvian.
In order to take office, the winner of the competition must still receive final approval from the Cabinet of Ministers, though this is likely to be a formality.
The Latvian Council of Science is an institution under the supervision of the Minister for Education and Science which aims to implement state science and technology development policy, ensure expertise, implementation and supervision of research programs and projects financed from the state budget, as well as from the European Union structural funds and other foreign financial instruments. Its stated motto is "Science for a better future".
