In Riga City, 235 teachers, or 3.2% of the total 7,333 teachers, have left their jobs or gone downtime in relation to the requirement to vaccinate against Covid-19, Anita Pēterkopa, head of the General Education Schools Department of Riga City Council, told Latvian Television November 29.

“Vacancies are filling, and it must be said that in schools the principals have assessed existing resources. There are very many educators who can teach other subjects as well, but it wasn't necessary. Consequently, the evaluation of internal resources was a priority,” Pēterkopa said.

As regards the epidemiological situation, the local government representative said the Covid-19 morbidity is higher in years 1-6 than years 7-12.

She also acknowledged that the first half of the school year, which will be over in three weeks, was full of challenges in Rīga education institutions due to the Covid-safety protocol in addition to the introduction of new learning content.
