Development of University of Latvia's (LU) Academic Center campus is important in an international context,  said Indriķis Muižnieks, LU rector, to Latvian Radio September 24.

LSM reported that on Monday, LU signed a contract on the construction of the House of Letters, which will be home to humanities and social sciences and form a single campus together with the Houses of Nature and Science.

Muižnieks said the campus is not a self-initiated target, it is necessary "if we want to go up in international ratings". He said that the new House of Letters will improve the study environment and accessibility, allow to concentrate studies an research in one place and develop interdisciplinary collaboration.

LU is planning to also build a student hotel and visitor center, sports infrastructure, House of Technologies and House of Healthcare. Muižnieks said that the House of Letters would still need an additional 5-6 million euros for development.

He added that LU hopes to collaborate with the government and entrepreneurs, form public and private partnerships. He said that state support is insufficient but LU hopes it might increase.
