There is virtually no threat of flooding in the city of Jēkabpils and upstream.
LVGMC hydrologist Līga Klints confirmed in an interview with Latvian Radio that the situation outside Jēkabpils is improving. The red alert hasn't been lifted in the area fir the coming hours, but over the course of the day, specialists will better see what happens in the river.
“Water levels have started to drop quite sharply in the last hour. Floods are beginning to recede. It should be noted that not all water goes back to the river because it can stay in lower places, so they could be flooded for longer. So the situation at the Zeļķi is improving. Ice movement in the reservoir continues, and water levels also fluctuate, water levels are not dangerous,” said Klints.
In an interview with LTV's “Rīta Panorāma”, Chairman of Jēkabpils municipality Council Raivis Ragainis (Latvian Green Party) said: “It looks like the craziest [..] is behind us. The ice tail that was downstream of Zeļķi has also started to move, and if it doesn't get compacted, then the water [level] is most likely to fall today.”
