Latvia improves its high international ranking on sustainability

Latvia is one of the leaders in achieving the UN's sustainable development goals (SDGs), ahead of not only our Baltic neighbors Lithuania and Estonia but also the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and the USA, a newly-published analysis concludes.

The latest report summarizes and compares information on countries' progress in working toward the resolution "Transforming our world: sustainable development agenda for 2023" adopted in 2015 in the UN General Assembly, or the so-called Agenda 2030, said a release from the Latvian State Chancellery, the government office.

It defines 17 sustainable development goals and 169 sub-goals, the achievement of which would reduce world poverty and make world development sustainable. Countries are ranked by their overall score. The overall score measures the total progress towards achieving all 17 SDGs. The score can be interpreted as a percentage of SDG achievement. A score of 100 would indicate that all SDGs have been achieved.

Latvia scores 80.99 in the sustainable development index, an increase of 0.29 points since last year, which moves it up from 14th to 13th worldwide among 166 countries surveyed.

"This can be considered a very high assessment of Latvia, because the report is prepared by the experts of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), using special methods to analyze the latest data, comparable among all countries," said the Latvian government.

SDSN experts have assessed that Latvia has already achieved or is on its way to achieving 63.4% of the goals. In 15.5% of the goals, Latvia's development is limited, while the fulfillment of 21.1% of the goals has worsened.

Latvia is followed by the other two Baltic states. Estonia with an index of 80.5 is in 15th place, while Lithuania with an index of 78.1 is in 31st place. The world leader is Finland (86.4), followed by Sweden (85.7) and Denmark (85.0) in second place, while Chad (45.1), Central African Republic (44.2) and the list 167 have the weakest results. . in place with an index of 40.1 is completed by South Sudan.
