Rīga Zoo closed Monday due to risk of branches breaking

Taking care of the safety of visitors, the Riga Zoo will be closed to visitors on Monday, December 18, the zoo said. It was also closed on Sunday.

On Sunday, December 17, Riga National Zoo was closed to visitors for security reasons. Tree surveys and sawing of broken, damaged branches and trees will also continue on Monday, December 18.

This year has been notable for the strong autumn storms, followed by sustained intense snowing, forming a thick layer of snow on tree branches. These factors are likely the cause of several old pines having branches and trunks broken or cracked.

While no direct threat to the zoo's guests was caused by the tree damage found, it was decided to close the zoo area to visitors on Sunday, December 17. Clean-up work will continue on Monday as well.

Riga Zoo employees will continue to fulfill their daily duties, including preparations for winter nights, which will take place from December 22 to January 7, during which the zoo will be open to visitors until nine in the evening.
