Latvia's Big Cleanup was bigger than last year

This year, compared to the previous year, the Big Cleanup was more active, with an overall number of 1,331 clean-ups registered as compared to 1,214 last year, representatives of the Cleanup said on April 27.

Of the 1,331 cleanups registered this year, 1,148 were community cleanups and 183 registered solo cleanups.

The coordinators added that solo sites were not recorded by all and were likely to be higher, given the fact that around 50,000 cleanup bags had been distributed.

Vita Jaunzeme, organizer of the Big Cleanup, welcomed the fact that this year people have been more active than last year.

“Despite the fact that Ogre municipality, which is the largest municipality in Latvia, has not participated, the number of Cleanup sites has increased by 117 places compared to last year. Moreover, given that solo cleanups are not necessarily to be registered, I assume there have been a lot more. Cleanups as a stable cultural asset has proven to be an integral spring ritual in which people gather once a year to donate their time and energy to the common good. Thanks to everyone who participated!” she said.
