Beware of rooftop icicles in Rīga

Take note – story published 3 years ago

As temperatures fall, dangerous icicles appear on rooftops of houses, representative of Rīga housing management (Rīgas namu pārvaldnieks) Krists Leiskals said January 20.

This can pose a danger to pedestrians. Rīga municipal police has observed that icicles are rather large, and in the case of four buildings they are already dangerous.

Police said the punishments for uncleaned rooftops were harsh. Moreover, cordoning off the pavement under the icicles is not the solution.

"Closing the sidewalk is a short-term solution that is designed for those cases where cleaning jobs take place, rather than blocking the sidewalks in the long term. Administrative responsibility is to be imposed for not cleaning rooftops. For individuals up to €350, legal entities up to €1,400," police representative Toms Sadovskis said.
