Daugavpils goes greener with compost landfill

Take note – story published 1 year ago

In the near future, a “green waste” landfill will start operating in Daugavpils, where compostables will be taken, Latvian Radio reported on August 15.

As of the autumn of this year, residents of Daugavpils municipality will be given the opportunity to sort park and garden waste – mown grass, leaves of trees, and organically degradable garden waste. They will become compost to be further used for municipal greening purposes.

Daugavpils Municipal Management Environment Engineer Kaspars Laizāns told Latvian Radio: “This will make it possible to transfer this waste separately, it will not be necessary to put it in the municipal waste. They will not need to be transported to the landfill, and the Liginišķi [green waste landfill] is much closer. It will be a big support for municipal companies dealing with leaf-collecting, and mowing grass in the city. You won't need to overpay anymore when you take them to a landfill. High-value micronutrient-rich compost will be created from the biodegradable mass, which can be used in urban greening. We will return that material to recycling."
