Rīga will 'seek solutions' to road maintenance

Take note – story published 2 years ago

This week, it is planned to find a solution for the maintenance of Rīga streets, Rīga Mayor Mārtiņš Staķis told Latvian Radio December 20.

Staķis said the recent situation with snow and uncleaned sidewalks was not acceptable. He acknowledged that it was a lesson for the City Council and also called on the public to be actively involved in identifying problems by reporting to the Rīga City Council.

“This will help us to identify irregularities, impose penalties and also apply coercive action,” Staķis said. “This will help us apply penalties if the guilty party are the cooperation partners associated with the Riga City Council.”

The Riga City Council has also learned a lesson and will evaluate what works in the current system and what is needed to maintain the city's sidewalks, Staķis added.

As reported, with the heavy snowfall in early December, Rīga streets were in an unsatisfactory condition and the Council decided to fine the maintenance company.
