Take note – story published 2 years ago

On Thursday, September 30, Latvia recorded more than 1,200 daily cases of Covid-19 infection for the second day in a row.

1,208 new cases were confirmed by the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC), five more than the day before. Previously, over 1,000 cases were last recorded in May.  It is worth noting that around twice as many daily tests are being conducted now as were being conducted then.

Of the positive cases, 991 were unvaccinated persons, or persons not fully vaccinated, and 217 were fully vaccinated. The proportion is nearly the same as the day before, when 985 persons were unvaccinated and 218 vaccinated.

The total number of cases detected since the start of the pandemic now stands at 158,291.

Of 28,442 tests carried out in the past 24 hours, 4.2% were positive, the same percentage as Wednesday.

The 14-day cumulative infection rate per 100,000 inhabitants jumped from 454.1 Wednesday to 486.5 Thursday.

There was also confirmation of eleven Covid-related deaths. Worryingly, one of the deceased was aged 30-39, two were aged 40-49, and eight were aged over 60.

The death toll since the start of the pandemic now stands at 2,717.

With the infection wave continuing to strengthen, the level of hospitalizations is becoming more of a focus. There are currently 490 people being treated for Covid-19 symptoms in Latvian hospitals, of which number 64 are displaying serious symptoms.

Meanwhile, in Estonia 789 cases were recorded and Lithuania recorded 1,806 cases during the last 24 hours.
