1,669 new Covid cases Saturday in Latvia

According to the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC) on Saturday, October 9, Latvia recorded 1,669 daily cases of Covid-19 infection.

Of the positive cases, 1,307 were unvaccinated persons, or persons not fully vaccinated, and 362 were fully vaccinated. The total number of cases detected since the start of the pandemic now stands at 169,917.

Of 17,851 tests carried out in the past 24 hours, 9.3% were positive.

The 14-day cumulative infection rate per 100,000 inhabitants continued to increase from 784.1 Friday to 829.2 Saturday, which is the highest figure since the start of the pandemic and the first time morbidity has passed the 800 threshold.

Sadly, there was also confirmation of 7 more Covid-related deaths. All of the deceased were aged over 40 years. The death toll since the start of the pandemic now stands at 2,794.

With the infection wave continuing to strengthen, the level of hospitalizations continues to be a focus of attention as hospitals come under intense pressure. According to the latest available figures there are 701 people being treated for Covid-19 symptoms in Latvian hospitals, of which number 81 are displaying serious symptoms.

The epidemiological situation in all three Baltic states continues to be among the worst in Europe. In Estonia more than 1,000 new cases were recorded and Lithuania recorded more than 2,400 cases during the last 24 hours.

Latvia is also part of the European Union's wider Covid-19 certification scheme. All arrivals to the country (including returnees) need to fill in an electronic declaration prior to coming to Latvia.
