Regional hospitals might be partly nationalized, says Health Minister

Not only in Daugavpils Regional Hospital which has repeatedly raised bankruptcy alarms but also in other hospitals outside Rīga, there are financial problems, therefore the Ministry of Health plans to assess whether these should in future be partially state-managed, Health Minister Hosams Abu Meri (New Unity) told Latvian Television October 18.

Abu Meri said the Ministry of Health (VM) will provide an assessment of the offer of Daugavpils Regional Hospital and municipality to the state to take over the hospital in the near future, and emphasized that the regional hospital is a national security object in the circumstances of this moment. “Knowing we live under war conditions we must be able to maintain hospital functions,” the minister noted.

“If a decision is made to take over this hospital, the state will have to pay a certain amount to keep it working,” he added.

At the same time, the Minister announced that the Ministry is thinking not only about improving the management of Daugavpils, but also other regional hospitals.

“We will look at Latvian hospitals outside Rīga because each hospital has debts. During a war, it is necessary to assess seriously the management of hospital networks, and then let us decide how the state can engage in each region,“ Abu Meri said.

According to him, the financial situation “is not so good” at Jēkabpils Hospital, as well as Kuldīga.

"If we want regional hospitals to work together, it is necessary that the state take over in part. This means that in the country we have to take from capital shares so that it is also possible for the state to decide on changes and we will also be able to get better cooperation between hospitals,” the minister assessed.

He has planned to visit all regional hospitals by the end of November to talk about the issues. Daugavpils Regional Hospital will be considered first because the situation there is acute.
