48 more Covid deaths Thursday in Latvia

Take note – story published 2 years ago

Another 1,378 cases of Covid-19 infection were added to Latvia's total November 11, according to the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC).

Of that number, 922 were unvaccinated persons, or persons not fully vaccinated, and 456 were fully vaccinated. The total number of cases detected since the start of the pandemic now stands at 236,765.

Of the 15,562 tests carried out in the past 24 hours, 8.9% were positive.

The 14-day cumulative morbidity rate per 100,000 population dropped substantially again from 1,405.2 Wednesday to 1323.8 Thursday, giving further evidence that the current infection wave is likely past its peak.

Sadly, 48 more Covid-related deaths were also confirmed. All were aged 40 years or over. Only three of the fatalities were fully vaccinated individuals. It is the second-highest daily death toll so far. The death toll since the start of the pandemic now stands at 3,646.

Wednesday data show 1,464 patients being treated in hospital with 232 patients displaying serious symptoms.

Meanwhile in Estonia there were more than 1,100 new cases and 13 deaths in the last 24 hours and in Lithuania there were more than 2,600 cases and 25 deaths.

Latvian Health Minister Daniels Pavļuts pointed to one encouraging trend: the concerted vaccination drive of recent weeks has seen Latvia climb up the rankings of the world's most- and least-vaccinated European countries. Having once been near the bottom of the list, Latvia is now mid-placed and rising.
