'Delta' strain of coronavirus continues spreading in Latvia

Last week, the proportion of the Covid-19 Delta variant in Latvia increased to 79%, according to information published July 21 by Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC).

Two weeks ago, the Alpha variant was still dominant. Last week, the Delta strain was found in 54% of the tested samples, whereas this week it is already at 79% and the Alpha variant has fallen to 13%, according to SPKC. 

The Delta variant, originating in India, was first identified in Latvia at the end of May.

 

The World Health Organization (WHO) has produced the short video below outlining the particular nature of the Delta variant.
