Issuance of Covid certificates to arrivals from third countries takes weeks

Issuing a Covid-19 certificate for people who have been vaccinated outside the European Union and European Economic Area can take two to four weeks, representative of National Health Service (NVD) Evija Štālberga told Latvian Television July 30.

If a person has been vaccinated outside the EU/EEA, they can apply for a Covid-19 certificate by bringing the original confirmation document of vaccination to one of the five branches of NVD in person. The NVD further examines the document and compares it to the official templates of the given country. The data are then entered in the e-health system, which gives the opportunity to obtain a digital Covid-19 certificate.

Štālberga told Latvian Television that the NVD has received around 500 applications. According to the rules, the NVD must examine the documents within a month's time. In reality, it takes two to four weeks.

According to Štālberga, there is a job vacancy for the position of document checker at the NVD. When the vacancy is filled, the waiting time could reduce to one and a half weeks.

Those who have arrived in Latvia from third countries and wish to obtain a certificate can also do it by conducting a Covid-19 test, which will be a paid-for service from August 1.
