According to the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC) on Wednesday, October 6 Latvia recorded 1,671 daily cases of Covid-19 infection, the second-highest daily figure since the start of the pandemic.

The highest daily figure remains the 1,861 cases recorded on December 31, 2020.

Of Wednesday's positive cases, 1,267 were unvaccinated persons, or persons not fully vaccinated, and 404 were fully vaccinated. The total number of cases detected since the start of the pandemic now stands at 164,801.

Of 21,825 tests carried out in the past 24 hours, 7.7% were positive.

The 14-day cumulative infection rate per 100,000 inhabitants soared from 627.9 Tuesday to 680.5 Wednesday, another figure close to the record high since the start of the pandemic that looks likely to be broken tomorrow. The current high is a rate of 693.9 from January 10 this year.

Sadly, there was also confirmation of 16 more Covid-related deaths. All of the deceased were aged over 50 years. The death toll since the start of the pandemic now stands at 2,773.

With the infection wave continuing to strengthen, the level of hospitalizations continues to be a focus of attention. According to the latest available figures there are 633 people being treated for Covid-19 symptoms in Latvian hospitals, of which number 64 are displaying serious symptoms.

The epidemiological situation in all three Baltic states continues to be among the worst in Europe. In Estonia more than 1,000 new cases were recorded and Lithuania recorded more than 2,500 cases during the last 24 hours.
