Latvia works on saliva-based COVID-19 tests

Take note – story published 3 years ago

Health Ministry's chief infectologist Uga Dumpis said September 18 that work on the use of saliva-based tests for COVID-19 diagnostics is taking place within the framework of the National Research Program.

Dumpis said that it was not yet possible to say when it could be done in practice. It would be particularly handy for testing children, who find the current method unpleasant.

He explained that the method of taking saliva samples is cheaper and more convenient, but “it's nothing unique, we are just working on it”.

“It is not the basic method currently, but many countries are going in that direction, and we are also keeping up. We analyze the data, check it, so it requires several months, and possibly will take another month, and it could also make sampling faster and more efficient. Right now, I wouldn't want to promise and say when, we're not in a situation like that,” Dumpis said.
