More Covid-19 patients with severe symptoms in Latvia

Not only are total numbers of Covid-19 patients in hospitals growing; those with severe course of the disease are also adding up, Latvian Television reported January 18.

The number of Covid-19 patients with severe symptoms had reached 99 by Monday. It's a new record.

Medics say that simple mathematical truths need to be understood. If a thousand people get sick every day, about 10 to 15% of them go to hospitals. Some of them will come to intensive therapy. The most severely ill have to spend longer in hospitals.

There are also young people among the severely ill, and more and more young people are losing their lives to the disease.

"We see severely ill patients with a big risk factor – they are overweight patients. Thus, obesity and also diabetes are serious risk factors for severe disease," said Stradiņš Hospital representative Monta Madelāne.

“What bothers us very much – it is the males of this age group who tend to have very rapid disease course. There are factors that remain unclear, but unfortunately most of these patients, of these young men who are dead have been overweight and part of them with diabetes,” said Stradiņš Hospital pneumonologist Zaiga Kravale.
